How Tutoring Helps Kids with Dyslexia
If your child dreads the thought of tutoring, you might feel torn. On one hand, you know they need support. On the other hand, you don’t want to add more frustration to their day. The truth is, tutoring for kids with dyslexia looks very different from the “extra homework” they might be imagining. Done the right way, it’s not about piling on work — it’s about unlocking learning in a way that finally makes sense.
Explaining What’s Going On
I start by helping kids understand that every brain learns and processes differently. My job is to figure out how their brain works and adjust my teaching so they can finally make sense of things that have found confusing in the past.
Meeting Kids Where They Are
In our first meeting, I often have the child read a passage or do math problems that I know will be easy for them. Then I point out: There was a time you couldn’t do this — and now you can! That proves they can learn. From there, we figure out where their reading or math train “got off the tracks,” and together we rebuild that track in a way their brain can stay on.
Building Step by Step
I design lessons that are challenging but never overwhelming. Concepts are introduced incrementally and sequentially, so students can keep experiencing success as they grow. Confidence builds one small win at a time, and with confidence comes the willingness to try more.
Celebrating Growth (Not Just Right Answers)
Whether it’s breaking down a long word or tackling long division, we celebrate the steps along the way. Growth is measured not only in correct answers, but also in persistence, strategy, and independence.
Why the Right Intervention Matters
With the right approach, students with dyslexia and other learning challenges can thrive. My training in Structured Literacy Instruction and Making Math Real allows me to choose the strategies and tools that fit each child best. I create custom practice sets and games so every minute of tutoring is purposeful and productive.
No busy work. No wasted effort. Just support that works.
